I Felt Two Feelings at the Same Time

A child feels happy about a new adventure and sad about leaving the old one, and learns mixed feelings can both be true.

The whole story

1. On Saturday morning, Maya packed the last book into a box. On Monday, she would start at a new school.

2. She tucked in her purple friendship bracelet. It had belonged to her best friend, Lila, since first grade.

3. Maya remembered the garden they had planted together. Their smallest seed had become the tallest sunflower.

4. At school, her classmates made her a welcome card for the new place. Maya smiled, but she folded it very carefully.

5. That evening, the boxes waited by the door. Maya wanted to ride through a new neighbourhood, but she did not want to leave this porch.

6. Maya opened her notebook. “My insides feel crowded,” she said. “Like two songs are playing at once.”

7. She drew one path for the things she would miss. She drew another for the things she might discover.

8. On Monday, Maya stood at the open door. Her feet felt heavy, and her fingers tingled around the notebook.

9. The new classroom had a block table and a window shaped like a star. Maya wanted to try everything.

10. A girl named Noor showed Maya how to build a bridge. Maya’s tower leaned, wobbled, and then stood tall.

11. At lunch, Maya called Lila. They planned a Saturday visit, and Maya’s cheeks lifted into a grin.

12. On the way home, Maya wrote two words in her notebook: “I’m glad.” Then she wrote two more: “I’m sad.”

13. Maya still missed her old classroom. She also wanted to build another bridge tomorrow.

14. Maya took a slow breath. She could be happy about the new adventure and sad about leaving the old one. Both feelings were true.
