1. On Monday morning, Maya drew a plan for the school garden. She wanted everyone to have a place to grow something.
2. At sharing time, Maya held up her plan. “A garden shaped like a rainbow,” she said. “Each color can grow a different kind of plant.”
3. The others chose Leo’s winding path idea. Everyone clapped, and Maya clapped too. Her hands felt heavy.
4. Maya sat beneath the tree and closed her notebook. She wondered if her idea had been silly, and then she wondered if she was silly too.
5. After lunch, the class began Leo’s garden. The path was clever, but the beds had no labels, and nobody knew where each color should go.
6. Maya opened her notebook again. “The rainbow beds could show us where everything belongs,” she said. Leo looked at the plan. “That could help.”
7. The class used Leo’s path and Maya’s colors. Red stones marked the tomatoes, and blue stones marked the herbs. Soon, every seed had a place.
8. Leo gave Maya the purple stone. “Your idea helped my idea,” he said. Maya tucked the stone into her pocket.
9. Maya’s rainbow idea had not been chosen first. It had still been worth making. And so was Maya.
