1. At sunrise, a small garden snail with a round shell climbed a fresh green leaf. Wherever it went, its house went too.
2. The snail wanted to visit the puddle. But the puddle was far below the leaf, and the snail was very slow.
3. A green frog noticed the shell. “Why carry a house everywhere?” he asked. “It must be heavy.”
4. The frog pointed to his own pond. “I leave my house behind,” he said. “You could do that too.”
5. The snail tried to imagine leaving its house behind. Then the afternoon sun warmed the ground, and the shade became precious.
6. The snail tucked its soft body into the shell. The shell made a cool, dry place while the hot air passed over the garden.
7. Then rain drummed on the leaves. The snail stayed snug beneath its shell while the frog splashed happily in the puddle.
8. When the rain stopped, the frog asked, “Is your shell a house you carry?” The snail stretched out and answered, “It is part of me.”
9. The shell was not a little house to put down. It grew with the snail, like a strong coat that could never be misplaced.
10. Now the frog understood. A snail carries its shell everywhere because the shell is part of its body. It protects the snail’s soft parts from drying out and from many dangers.
