Why Do We Slip More on Wet Floors?

Wet floors can be slippery because water reduces friction between our shoes and the surface.

The whole story

1. On Saturday morning, Mina pressed one red sneaker onto the dry kitchen tile. It stayed put while she leaned on it. Mina wanted to know why.

2. She set two matching tiles on a low tray: one dry and one with a thin puddle. A folded towel waited beside them. Mina was ready for a careful test.

3. First, Mina tested the dry tile. Her sneaker held the surface, even when she gave it a gentle tug. Something was gripping.

4. Next, she tested the wet tile. The same gentle tug moved the sneaker farther, so Mina put one hand on the table and kept her feet on the rug.

5. Mina leaned close to the sole. Its tiny rubber bumps met the tile, like little fingers meeting a rough wall.

6. Water made a thin layer between the rubber and the tile. The little bumps could not press and catch as well. That grip has a name: friction.

7. Mina dried the wet tile and tried again. The sneaker held on more firmly. Her careful test had given her the answer.

8. Mina set the towel beside the sink and stepped onto the dry tile. Wet floors can be slippery because water reduces friction between our shoes and the surface.
