3. Maya knew the answer. Sunlight, water, and soil. But when Ms. Alvarez looked her way, the words hid.
4. Her mind felt full of marbles. One rolled away, then another.
5. At lunch, Maya told Theo, “I knew it after the moment passed.” Theo nodded. “That happens to me, too.”
6. Theo said, “Maybe we can ask for a pause. A pause gives our brains a little bridge.”
7. Maya practiced softly, “May I have a moment to think?” The sentence felt small, but strong.

12. Maya smiled all the way home. She had not answered fast. She had answered when she was ready.
