The Compliment That Felt Too Bright

A shy child feels awkward when praised and practices accepting kind words without hiding or pushing them away.

The whole story

1. On Monday morning, Mina pinned her paper star to the class display. She checked its corners twice. Then she tucked her sketchbook under her arm.

2. Mina had painted the star with the brightest yellow she could find. Her teacher leaned close. “That star catches the light,” she said.

3. The words felt too bright, almost like a lamp in her face. Mina covered her cheeks. “It is just yellow paint,” she whispered.

4. At lunch, Mina hid beneath the biggest tree. Theo came over with his paper kite. “Your star looks like sunshine,” he said.

5. Mina shut her sketchbook. “Please do not say that.” Theo lowered the kite. “Okay,” he said. “I will wait.”

6. After lunch, Mina told her teacher, “Kind words make me want to disappear.” Her teacher nodded. “You do not have to shine all at once.”

7. Together, they chose a tiny practice. Mina would look up, breathe in, and say, “Thank you.” She did not have to add anything else.

8. The next day, Theo noticed Mina’s new star. “You made the points so neatly,” he said. Mina’s fingers twitched toward her cheeks.

9. Mina breathed in. She looked at Theo. “Thank you,” she said. The bright feeling stayed, but it did not knock her over.

10. The words still felt bright. Mina did not hide them, and she did not push them away. She carried them gently, like a little star.
