The River Dolphin Navigating a Flooded Forest

Seasonal floods can turn forests into watery hunting grounds where river dolphins use sound, memory, and flexible movement to find fish among trees.

The whole story

1. At dawn, a young Amazon river dolphin with dusky pink-gray skin slipped between the trees. The forest floor had vanished beneath the rising river.

2. The fish had followed the flood into the forest. They were hidden somewhere among the roots, and the dolphin wanted to find them before the current carried them farther away.

3. The dolphin sent a sharp click into the murky water. The returning sound told it where the roots ended, where the trunks began, and where open water waited.

4. The first path was too tight. The dolphin folded its body around the trunk, but the fish darted through a crack no wider than its beak.

5. It backed away and remembered the forest as it had been before the water rose: the forked branch, the curled vine, and a channel leading toward the old fig tree.

6. The remembered channel was open. It led to a clearing where fish flickered beneath floating leaves, but a fresh wall of roots blocked the shortest route.

7. The dolphin clicked again. One echo came back from the branch. Another returned from open water. A third trembled with the quick shapes of fish.

8. The direct route would not do. The dolphin bent left, slipped beneath the branch, and used its flexible body to turn where a straight swimmer would have stopped.

9. The echoes opened a way. The old fig tree stood above the clearing, just as the dolphin remembered, and the fish were waiting in the grass below.

10. By late afternoon, the dolphin had found enough fish to fill its belly. Around it, the flooded forest hummed with hidden channels, roots, and returning sounds.
