1. At first light, Tavi pressed one front leg against a strand stretched between two stems in the garden. The silk trembled under her touch, and she looked across the gap toward the flowers where moths would feed that evening.

2. Tavi wanted a supper that could fly away, but her old web had sagged between the stems. A moth could slip through its wide holes, so Tavi needed a web that would stop a flying meal without covering every leaf.

3. Tavi chose two sturdy stems and fastened a broad outer frame between them. From that frame, she placed supporting lines like the spokes of a wheel. The web began with a plan, not a pile of silk.

4. Before noon, a breeze pushed a wet leaf into the half-built web. One frame strand held, but another snapped with a tiny twang. The leaf slid free, and Tavi gathered the loose silk instead of starting over.

5. Instead of making every strand thick, Tavi rebuilt only what the leaf had damaged. She left open spaces between the spokes and curved a finer line around them. A useful web did not need to be solid; it needed to be placed wisely.

6. Some of Tavi's silk lines had to bear a pull, while others had to stretch and give. She laid sticky droplets along the curved capture spiral, leaving the supporting frame dry. Each kind of silk had a job.

7. By evening, a pale green moth flew between the flowers and the stems. Its wing touched the sticky spiral, and the web bowed around it. For one quiet moment, the flying meal had stopped.

8. The web did not snap. Its strong frame held the pull, while the stretchy threads spread it across the pattern. Sticky droplets kept the moth from slipping free, and Tavi reached it without racing across the whole web.

9. Tavi had not woven a wall across the garden. She had used strong silk for the frame, stretchy silk where a pull might spread, and sticky silk only along the paths an insect was likely to cross. The careful design saved both her energy and her material.
