2. The water tasted sharp on her fingers. Lina frowned at the roots. Ordinary garden plants would wilt in such a drink, but these trees stood calmly where the tide came and went.
3. Then Lina noticed a pale crust along one root. The tree had let some salt pass into the root, but filtered much of it before the salt could travel upward.
4. Around another tree, thin roots poked above the mud like a crowd of little chimneys. Lina pressed her palm near them and felt the warm air breathe through the soft ground.
5. A long green seed hung from a branch, shaped almost like a slender spear. When it dropped, it could float instead of sinking, waiting for the tide to carry it to a muddy place.
6. Lina placed one seed in the water and watched it settle lengthwise on the tide. It drifted past her boots, turned with the current, and came to rest against a soft bank.
7. By afternoon, the tide had climbed over the path she used that morning. Lina had to take a longer route, stepping carefully from root to root while the coast rearranged itself beneath her.
8. Under the trees, the tangled roots made a quiet maze. Tiny fish slipped between them, young prawns hovered in the shade, and a small crab tucked itself into a safe pocket of mud.
9. Lina had come looking for one answer and found four. Mangroves filter salt through their roots, lift air-breathing structures above the mud, float their seeds to new ground, and knit dense roots into shelter for young marine life.
10. The coast would keep shifting, and the salt water would keep returning. Still, the mangroves would stand: filtering, breathing, floating, and holding a living nursery between their roots.
