The whole story

1. At first light, Mina knelt beside a mountain stream, holding a wet gray pebble between her fingers. Rain had drummed on the slopes all night, and the mountain looked unchanged. Mina wanted to know whether a mountain could grow while rain was tearing it down.

2. By midmorning, Mina stood at a sunlit cliff where rainwater had found a hairline crack. Water that freezes inside rock expands like a tiny wedge, prying the crack wider. When the ice melts, loose grains wait beneath the cliff for the next shower.

3. Below the cliff, the river curled through a bed of brown stones. Mina watched sand and tiny rock pieces gather in the current, each one worn from a larger piece of the mountain. The river did not need to carry a whole boulder to lower a slope; a thousand small grains could do that work.

4. Higher on the trail, Mina reached a safe overlook above a blue-white glacier. Dark stones caught beneath the ice had scratched long grooves into the valley floor, and the broad glacier had pressed the valley into a deep, U-shaped hollow. The glacier was another force of weathering and erosion, cold enough to carve.

5. On sheltered ground that afternoon, Mina found a fresh landslide spread across a quiet slope. No one had been near it. Rain had loosened stones, and gravity had pulled them into a fan below the exposed rock. The mountain had lost a little height there, but it had also revealed layers hidden inside.

6. At an exposed wall beside the trail, Mina raised her hand lens to bands of red, cream, and charcoal rock. Some layers had begun as mud on an ancient seafloor. Deep inside Earth, tectonic plates pressed together, folding and lifting those layers into the mountain.

7. Mina rolled the smooth gray pebble between her fingers and watched a thin cloud pass the ridge. Rain worked in storms, frost in seasons, glaciers in ice ages, and tectonic forces over millions of years. She had been asking one quick question of a landscape that kept its answers in very long time.

8. Near sunset, at a broad overlook, Mina could see the whole mountain at once: a glacier high above, a river cutting the valley, a bright landslide fan on one slope, and folded rock layers holding up the ridge. Nothing in the view was taking turns. The mountain was being lifted and worn down at the same time.

9. At the stream again, Mina held the gray pebble over the water and studied its rounded edges. It had once been part of a larger rock, yet the ridgeline above her still stood high because pressure below continued to push Earth's crust upward. The pebble was a small answer, and the mountain was a much larger one.

10. At sunset, Mina faced the long purple ridge, the smooth gray pebble warm in her palm. She no longer expected a single winner. A mountain can be growing and shrinking at the same time.
