The Algae Bloom That Looked Beautiful but Stole the Oxygen

Nutrient-rich water can trigger rapid algae growth, and when algae die and decay, microbes may use so much oxygen that fish and other animals struggle.

The whole story

1. At sunrise, Rowan knelt beside Willow Pond with a blank page above her notebook. She wanted to catch the pond at its most beautiful: reeds silver with dew, frogs hidden in the grass, and water glowing green as polished glass.

2. Rowan dipped a clear jar just below the surface. Tiny green specks swirled inside, and the whole pond shone in bands of emerald, lime, and gold. She smiled and began to sketch, certain she had found the best page in her nature journal.

3. Then Rowan noticed a narrow ditch leading downhill from the fields. After the rain, water carrying extra nutrients had poured into the pond. Those nutrients were like a feast, and the algae multiplied faster than the pond could balance.

4. Under the reeds, a school of small silver minnows with charcoal stripes hovered near the surface. Rowan lowered her pencil. The green water still looked lovely, but the minnows had stopped darting through it.

5. By late afternoon, the bloom had thickened into bright green swirls. In sunlight, algae made food and released oxygen, yet a pond crowded with too much algae was already borrowing trouble from the night. Rowan closed her notebook and carried the jar home to test the water.

6. At dawn the next day, the green swirls had turned dull along the shore. Algae were dying, and a school of small silver minnows with charcoal stripes gathered in a quiet patch where the water was cooler. Their mouths opened at the surface, then closed.

7. Rowan set a drop of pond water beside a dissolved-oxygen test, then waited for the color to settle. The result was low. She looked from the pale test to the quiet pond and understood that the beautiful bloom had changed the water itself.

8. Algae do not vanish when they die. Microbes break their remains down, and that work uses oxygen dissolved in the water. Rowan's perfect green pond had become a crowded room with too little air, so fish and other animals struggled to breathe.

9. Rowan drew the pond as it truly was: shining green above, minnows near the surface, and a pale test beside the jar.
