1. At first light, Mica hovered above a coral ledge at the reef’s cleaning station. She waited for a visitor to trust her first, while the reef brightened around her.

2. Then Brass, a coral grouper nearly as wide as the ledge, arrived. He stopped beside Mica and opened his jaws wide, offering a cleaning job larger than any she had tried.

3. Mica entered the grouper’s mouth. She did not hide behind a tooth; she worked in the open, where one careless twitch could end the appointment.

4. She picked tiny parasites from the gums and lifted dead skin from the folds around the lips. Brass held still while her striped body flashed between his teeth.
