1. At sunrise in Alexandria, Hypatia drew a circle in the dust and set a bronze compass beside it. Soon, students would gather to ask why a shape behaved the way it did.

2. Hypatia had learned mathematics from her father, Theon, and then carried her questions farther. She studied the stars, measured angles, and searched for explanations that could survive a second look.

3. “If two circles share a center, what can we know about them?” Hypatia asked. A student guessed. Another disagreed. Hypatia only widened the circle and invited them to test both ideas.

4. The students did not always agree, and neither did the people beyond the courtyard. In the streets, arguments about faith, power, and the city’s leaders grew louder.

5. Some mornings, voices reached the lesson before the students did. Hypatia listened, then placed a straightedge across the dust and began again.
