1. At dawn, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar bent over his notebook aboard a ship bound for England. Outside, the sea shone silver. Inside, one question kept opening wider: What happens when a star runs out of fuel?

2. He knew that stars were not simply glowing balls. Deep inside, gravity pulled inward while hot gas pushed outward. As long as the forces balanced, a star could shine.

3. But when the fuel was gone, gravity would have the stronger pull. Chandrasekhar wondered whether a star could shrink forever, or whether nature set a limit.

4. In Cambridge, he worked through the physics of tiny, crushed stars. He wrote, erased, and wrote again, testing each step instead of trusting a comfortable answer.

5. The faster the particles inside the star moved, the more unusual their behavior became. Chandrasekhar included that change in his calculation, and a boundary began to appear.

6. Soon he presented his result to other scientists. His calculation said that a star above a certain mass could not remain an ordinary tiny star after its fuel disappeared.

7. A famous scientist disagreed in public. The room grew uncomfortable, and the older voices sounded certain. Chandrasekhar lowered his eyes to the equations he had checked so carefully.
