1. On the last afternoon in the courtyard house, Mira carried basil pots from one doorstep to another.
2. Mrs. Alvarez pressed a bowl of apricots into Mira’s hands. “For the new place,” she said. “So it will know you have arrived.”
3. The next morning, the courtyard house emptied into boxes. Mira kept the basil, the blue bowl, and one folding chair beside her.
4. The new apartment was higher than any tree Mira knew. It had smooth walls, a quiet hall, and no courtyard at all.
5. Mira placed a basil pot outside their door. Then she waited for someone to ask what it was for.
6. For three days, Mira held the elevator for people she barely knew. They thanked her, but everyone disappeared behind a different door.
7. On the fourth day, Mira counted the apricots. There were twelve, and nobody in the building knew they were meant to be shared.
8. Mira set the blue bowl beside the basil and placed the folding chair nearby. “If anyone wants an apricot,” she called, “please take one.”
9. One apricot became two jars of pickles. The pickles became bread, oranges, and a flower that needed a sunny window.
10. The building manager found an unused patch beside the entrance. Everyone brought something, and Mira brought the first basil pot.
11. The high-rise still had elevators, locked doors, and a long way up. But every Saturday, people came down, brought something, and stayed awhile.
12. When Mira offered the last apricot to a new neighbor, the girl asked, “Will there be more next week?” Mira looked at the basil, the chair, and the people gathered around them. “There will be,” she said.
