1. On a cold spring morning in 1846, Ignaz Semmelweis stood in the stone corridor of Vienna General Hospital with one hand on the maternity-ward door. He had come to work with new mothers, but childbed fever was killing too many of them.

2. The hospital had two maternity clinics. In one, doctors and medical students cared for women; in the other, midwives did. The difference was startling: women were far more likely to die in the clinic staffed by doctors and students.

3. Semmelweis checked the records again and again. The pattern returned month after month. The clinic with midwives had fewer deaths, even though both clinics cared for women who had just given birth.

4. Then his colleague Jakob Kolletschka died after a small wound during an autopsy. His illness looked strangely like childbed fever. Semmelweis wondered whether something from the autopsy room could travel on hands into the maternity clinic.

5. In May 1847, he required doctors and students to scrub their hands in a chlorinated-lime solution before examining each woman. The sharp-smelling wash was an uncomfortable answer to a question no one wanted to ask.

6. The records changed. Deaths in the doctors’ clinic fell from roughly one woman in ten to roughly one in fifty. Semmelweis had not guessed; he had watched what happened when the hands were washed.

7. Yet many doctors resisted the rule. It suggested that respected physicians might carry danger on their own hands, and no accepted theory of germs explained the result. Some called the demand insulting; others dismissed the numbers.

8. When his appointment in Vienna ended, Semmelweis returned to Budapest with his ledger and his evidence. The rule faded in Vienna, and the argument he had made became harder to hear.

9. At St. Rochus Hospital, he brought the washing rule back. Deaths fell there too, but his later writing sounded to many colleagues like an accusation, so the evidence still did not win the welcome it deserved.

10. Later, work by scientists such as Louis Pasteur and Joseph Lister helped medicine understand germs and contamination. Their ideas made sense of what Semmelweis’s records had shown years earlier: invisible material could travel from hands to patients.
