Who Put a Mountain in the Middle of Breakfast?

A tiny mountain appears on the kitchen table, and two siblings shrink their argument by climbing it together piece by piece.

The whole story

1. On a bright Saturday morning, Mira and Theo reached for the last strawberry.

2. “I saw it first,” said Mira. “I was reaching first,” said Theo.

3. Mira pulled. Theo pulled. The strawberry stayed exactly where it was.

4. Then the table gave a tiny wobble. A tiny mountain rose between them.

5. “You put it there,” said Mira. “I did not,” said Theo. Neither child could reach the strawberry now.

6. Mira climbed first, but the mountain was made of slippery breakfast crumbs.

7. Theo pushed a toast crumb under her foot. “Try this,” he said.

8. Mira reached down. Theo reached up. Together, they made a path.

9. At the top, the argument looked very small.

10. Mira broke the strawberry in two. Theo gave her the bigger half.

11. Piece by piece, they climbed down and shrank the mountain.

12. By the time breakfast was over, only a crumb-sized hill remained. Mira and Theo ate beside it, shoulder to shoulder.
