2. At school, Mrs. Bell asked, “What did you do this weekend?” Mina wanted to answer, but the words tangled together.
3. “I had a good bad time,” Mina said. Mrs. Bell smiled kindly, but Mina wished the floor would open and swallow her shoes.
4. After school, Mina found a golden pencil beneath a bench. Its tip shimmered, although no one had sharpened it.
5. Mina carried it to the library and whispered, “I had a good bad time.” The golden pencil began to draw.
6. On the paper appeared a red kite, a high branch, and two children laughing below. Mina had loved the adventure, even when the kite got stuck.
7. Mina tried again. “I am fine,” she whispered. The pencil drew a little house with sunshine outside and a gray cloud tucked inside.
8. That evening, Mina showed the picture to her mother. “There is a cloud in my house,” she said. Her mother waited, and Mina added, “I miss Dad when he works late.”
9. The next morning, Mina brought the pencil to school. When Mrs. Bell asked how she was, Mina held up the drawing.

11. Mrs. Bell nodded. “That makes sense.” A classmate said, “My heart gets knots, too.” Mina's shoulders dropped, as if they had been carrying a heavy backpack.
12. Mina put the golden pencil back in its box. She still did not know every name for every feeling. But now she knew how to begin.
