6. Ava and Mateo had rushed past the fork without looking. Nia called them back and showed them the empty branch.
7. Ava found the ribbon in the tall grass. Mateo tied it back on the branch, and the shortcut became clear again.
8. They finished the practice race together, even though they were not first. The team had chosen the slowest runner, and she noticed the missing shortcut marker everyone else had rushed past.
