1. On Saturday morning, Mira packed her water bottle, her map, and an apple. She was ready for a walk to Pine Hill.
2. Mira turned around to tie her boot. When she looked back, the backpack had packed a scarf, an umbrella, a flashlight, and three socks. It was preparing for everything.
3. Then it added a saucepan, a toy boat, and a rubber duck. Mira lifted the backpack, but her knees bent like noodles.
4. At the trailhead, Mira set the backpack on a bench. The bag leaned left, then right, as if it could not decide where to sit.
5. The backpack tipped over. Out rolled a scarf, an umbrella, a flashlight, and a saucepan. The rubber duck landed in Mira’s lap.
6. Mira made two piles. The first had what she needed for Pine Hill. The second had answers to questions nobody had asked.
7. Mira put the map, water bottle, apple, and sweater back inside. “These matter today,” she said. The backpack made room.
8. With the smaller pack on her shoulders, Mira climbed. Her steps felt springy, and the path seemed shorter.
9. At the top, Mira shared her apple with the backpack. Below them, the valley stretched wide and bright.
10. The backpack had wanted to prepare for every possible problem. Mira showed it another way: choose what matters, and the journey is easier.
