The Cat Who Hired a Child as Her AssistantA very serious cat assigns impossible jobs, but her young assistant discovers the cat mostly needs company.
1. At sunrise, Miss Pru sat on the bakery step with her notebook open. She was hiring an assistant.
2. Mira stopped in front of her. Miss Pru pointed to a puffy cloud. “Bring me that,” she said. “Use both hands.”
3. The cloud drifted away, and rain began. Mira held out three bowls. “Sort these raindrops by size,” said Miss Pru.
4. The raindrops jumped from bowl to bowl and became one puddle. Miss Pru tapped her pencil. “Teach that snail to hurry.”
5. The snail reached one leaf. Mira sat in the grass. Miss Pru opened her notebook to one last blank page. “Find the quietest place in town,” she said.
6. Mira found a bench under an apple tree. It was quiet, except for Miss Pru’s enormous sigh. The cat sat at one end.
7. Mira looked at the empty half of the bench. “Why are all your jobs impossible?” she asked. Miss Pru closed her notebook. “They are not jobs,” she said. “I need someone to sit beside me.”
8. Mira placed the basket on the ground and stayed. Miss Pru leaned against her knee. For the first time all day, the cat stopped assigning work.
9. The next morning, Mira came back. Miss Pru offered her the gold pencil. “Your new job is to return tomorrow,” said the cat. Miss Pru had hired an assistant. Mostly, she had hired someone to sit with her.
