Mara hurried down the stairs on Saturday morning. She carried a library book and her orange pencil case. Then her foot found a step that had not been there yesterday.

2. Mara sat on the stair and counted. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Then came one more. “That is definitely extra.”
3. Mara called Grandma. Grandma came with a basket of towels. She tapped the extra step. It sounded like an ordinary step, which was not helpful at all.
4. Mara tried again. She watched her feet, held the banister, and stepped slowly. Still, the extra step lifted her heel and made her pencil case pop open.
5. Pencils rolled across the floor. Mara grabbed at them too fast and knocked them farther away. Her hands squeezed into little fists.
6. Mara wanted to stomp. She wanted to shout at the staircase. Instead, she stood at the top and blew out a long breath.
7. Mara sat on the extra step. Her feet rested on the step below, and her hands rested on her knees. The staircase was quiet.
8. Mara breathed in through her nose. She breathed out slowly. Her fingers opened, one by one.
9. Mara had three choices. She could rush and trip. She could turn around. Or she could pause, breathe, and choose one careful step.
10. Mara chose the careful step. She placed her foot, checked her balance, and moved on.
11. After that, Mara did not like the extra step any better. But she knew what to do when she reached it.
12. The staircase had added one extra step. Mara had added one small pause. And from that pause, she could choose what came next.
