The Island That Floated Away During Recess

When the playground turns into a floating island, classmates who rarely agree must choose one plan together to steer it home.

The whole story

1. Maya drew a river at recess. Leo built a tower beside it, while Priya guarded the blocks and Omar held the jump rope.

2. Then the chalk river gave a tiny shiver. The playground lifted at the edges, as if the ground had remembered it was a boat.

3. The playground rose above the school roof. It became an island with swings, a slide, and four children on board.

4. Maya pointed home. Leo pointed east. Priya wanted to follow the birds, and Omar said the wind knew best.

5. Everyone had a plan, and every plan pointed somewhere else. The island drifted past the water tower.

6. The island tilted, and the block tower leaned. The children grabbed what they could, but arguing did not steer anything.

7. Maya took a breath. “We need one plan,” she said. “A plan with a part for everyone.”

8. Maya chose the route. Leo made a wind marker. Priya tied the rope, and Omar held it toward home.

9. “Together, now!” called Maya. The rope pulled, the blocks leaned, and the island turned a little.

10. The island turned toward the school. No one’s plan had done it alone.

11. The playground settled beside the school with one soft bounce. The children stepped down together.

12. The next day, they played beside the chalk island. When Maya asked where to begin, four hands pointed to the middle.
