The Shadow That Wanted a Turn in Front

A shadow keeps stepping ahead of its child until both learn that leading and following can switch during a long walk.

The whole story

1. Maya set off along the country path on a bright morning. She carried a blue walking stick and a plan to reach the hill before lunch.

2. Maya stopped at a puddle. Her shadow stepped ahead. “Wait for me,” Maya said. But the shadow pointed to the next bend.

3. At the low branch, Maya reached up. Her shadow got there first and tapped the leaves. Maya frowned at the ground.

4. Maya tried to get in front. She skipped, hopped, and walked backward. Every time, her shadow found the front again.

5. Maya sat on a warm stone. “Why must you always go first?” she asked. Her shadow sat too, as if thinking hard.

6. Under a tree, Maya raised her hand into the sun. Her shadow grew small beneath her boots. Then Maya understood: the light was choosing the place.

7. When Maya crossed the open field, the sun moved behind her. Her shadow stretched backward. For the first time, Maya stood in front.

8. Maya led for a while. She chose the smooth stones and the sunny side of the path. Her shadow followed quietly.

9. At the hilltop, the sun began to sink. The shadow stretched ahead once more. Maya did not mind.

10. Maya had led, and her shadow had followed. Then her shadow led, and Maya followed. On a long walk, there was room for both.
