The Doorbell Rang for Nobody

A mysterious doorbell leads a child to find small signs of neighbors helping one another without waiting to be thanked.

The whole story

1. On Saturday morning, Mira rang the doorbell. Ding-dong! Nobody came.

2. Mira checked the porch. There was no visitor, but one muddy footprint sat below the bell.

3. She followed the footprint to the gate. There she found a red mitten, warm from someone's hand.

4. At number twelve, Mr. Patel was carrying apples. One mitten was missing from his hand.

5. Mira left the mitten where Mr. Patel would find it. Then she heard it again. Ding-dong!

6. Nobody stood at the next door. A bag of bread waited there, and blue gloves peeked from beneath the mat.

7. Mira waited behind the trellis. Lena placed the bread down and slipped away before anyone could thank her.

8. The bell rang again. Near the garden, Mira found tomatoes in a crate and a scarf on the fence.

9. Theo had lost the scarf while helping water the garden. Mira handed it back, and Theo hugged it close.

10. By evening, everyone had heard the bell. Nobody knew who was ringing it.

11. Mira looked behind the bell. A long vine had curled around the button.

12. The vine had rung for nobody. But it had led Mira to everybody: neighbors helping neighbors, and never waiting for thanks.
