The Chair Saved for Someone Who Never Came

A child keeps an empty chair at a class project table until it becomes a welcome place for a new student.

The whole story

1. On Monday morning, Maya placed one chair at the end of the project table. She set a blue pencil beside it.

2. “That chair is for our fourth teammate,” Maya said. “Someone new may come today.”

3. The class made a paper garden. Maya left room for one more flower.

4. Tuesday passed. Wednesday passed. The chair stayed empty, but Maya kept it tidy.

5. By Friday, the garden was finished. The empty chair was still waiting.

6. On Monday, Maya almost put the chair away. Then the classroom door opened.

7. A new student stood there. Maya pulled out the chair. “This is yours,” she said.

8. Leo sat down and chose a blue pencil. The garden grew one flower more.

9. Maya had saved the chair for someone who never came. It became a welcome place for someone who did.
