1. Nora carried a box across the old living room on moving morning. It was marked FRAGILE, so she held it with both hands.
2. At the front door, the box gave a tiny rattle. Nora froze with one red sneaker on the step.
3. Mara set down the tape. Nora pressed her ear to the cardboard. Something inside went click-click.
4. Nora wanted the new house to have the porch bell's ding, Sunday pancakes, and the soft rug where she read. She could pack a notebook, but she could not pack a whole home.
5. Mara and Nora carried the box to the moving van. It rattled between them like a tiny chorus.
6. At the new house, the rooms were bright and bare. Nora set the box in the middle of her empty room, but it sat still.
7. She tilted her head and pressed one palm to the cardboard. No click-click came back. Nora sat beside the box and opened her notebook to a blank page.
8. Mara knelt beside her. Together, they lifted the flaps. A familiar smell of cedar and cinnamon slipped out.
9. The rattle had come from buttons clicking, a wooden spoon knocking, and the brass bell chiming against the box. The box was full of small pieces of the old home.
10. Mara hung the little brass porch bell beside the new door. Nora held its wooden pull, ready for its first ring.

12. That evening, Nora sat on the blue quilt with her notebook. The porch bell gave a bright little ding, and Mara sat close beside her. The box was empty, but the new home carried the best parts of the old one.
