The Frog Orchestra Lost Its Loudest Croak

A pond orchestra panics before a moonlit concert until the smallest frog shows that rhythm can guide music when one sound is missing.

The whole story

1. At sunset, Pip balanced two rhythm sticks on a lily pad. Bramble warmed up his brass trumpet, Mallow polished her silver cymbals, and Tock hugged his hollow log drum. Tonight, the pond orchestra would play beneath the moon.

2. Bramble opened his mouth to practice the loudest croak. Only a tiny puff of air came out. He tried again, but his booming croak had vanished.

3. The concert was tonight. Mallow stared at her cymbals, and Tock dropped a drumstick. Even Pip's sticks stopped before they touched. Without Bramble's big croak, everyone forgot when to begin.

4. Pip climbed onto an upside-down lily pad. He tapped one stick, then the other. Tap, tap, pause. The beat could be their doorway.

5. Tock placed his drum beside the pad. He answered, boom, boom, pause. Mallow chimed after him. Bramble waited for Pip's next three taps, then lifted his trumpet.

6. Soon the pond had a pattern. Tap, tap, pause. Boom, boom, pause. Chime, shimmer, hush. Bramble could not croak, so he joined on the beat. The music no longer needed one giant sound to tell it where to go.

7. The moon rose over the reeds. Pip gave the first quiet taps. Tock, Mallow, and Bramble entered together, and the melody curled across the water. Bramble smiled when his trumpet found its place.

8. The last note floated under the moon. Bramble's loudest croak was still missing, but Pip's steady rhythm guided the whole pond orchestra home.
