1. At sunrise, a small red bell pepper rolled to the front of the kitchen basket. Today, it wanted to be dessert.
2. The strawberries wore sugar like snow. The cake had fluffy clouds of frosting. The cookies sat in a neat, chocolatey row.
3. The bell pepper squeezed beside the cupcake. It tried to look sweet. It even held its green stem like a fancy hat.
4. But the pepper was not sugary. It was not cakey. A sprinkle stuck to its side, and that did not help.
5. The pepper rolled away and found lunch waiting. Lunch looked polite, but it looked terribly plain.
6. Then the pepper had an idea. If it could not be dessert, perhaps it could make lunch worth waiting for.
7. The grown-up sliced the pepper into bright red rings. They looked like little suns, and they smelled fresh.
8. The pepper joined the lettuce, corn, cabbage, carrots, and cucumber. Lunch became colorful, crunchy, and complete.
9. Crunch! The child took one bite, then another. The pepper sat taller with every crunch.
10. The sweets were still delicious. But the pepper had discovered something better than pretending to be dessert. It had made lunch delicious in its own way.
