Late one afternoon, Mina spread a jigsaw puzzle across the kitchen table. Pip sat beside a nearly finished picture of a red kite above a green hill. Pip wanted to join it.

1. Late one afternoon, Mina spread a jigsaw puzzle across the kitchen table. Pip sat beside a nearly finished picture of a red kite above a green hill. Pip wanted to join it.
2. Mina tried Pip in the empty space above the hill. Pip's plain blue corner looked very ordinary beside the red kite and yellow sun. The piece did not fit yet.
3. Pip watched the colorful pieces click together. It had no stripe, sparkle, or tiny cloud. I am only blue, Pip thought. No one will miss me.
4. Pip tucked itself beneath the braided rug. Its sky-blue corner peeked from the rug's edge while the unfinished puzzle waited above.
5. Mina searched beside the table, under the chair, and around the puzzle. She found a button, two crumbs, and one lonely sock. She did not find Pip.
6. Under the rug, Pip saw the empty space above the hill. Without that piece, the sky had a white hole in it. Pip pressed its cardboard edge flat.
7. A warm stripe of afternoon light rested on the rug. Pip looked at its plain blue corner and the white space. The corner was not empty after all. It was a piece of sky.
8. Pip rested beside the table leg, out from under the rug. It was ready to be found.
9. Mina found Pip beside the rug and held it over the empty space. The shape matched. Pip's blue corner belonged above the hill.
10. The red kite shone, the yellow sun glowed, and the sky stretched wide and blue. Pip rested quietly in its place. Its plain blue corner mattered after all. The picture needed sky to feel complete.
