The Day the Wind Asked for DirectionsA child guides a lost wind through trees, laundry, and clouds, discovering that even wild things sometimes need help.
1. On a bright morning, Mira unfolded a map beside the garden gate. A little gust tugged at the corner.
2. “Excuse me,” whispered the gust. “Could you tell me the way to the clouds?” Mira blinked. The wind had asked for directions.
3. Mira pointed past the meadow. “Go through the whispering trees, then follow the bright laundry.” The wind curled into a question mark.
4. The trees whispered in every direction. The wind spun left, spun right, and gently bumped into a fern.
5. Mira held up one palm. “Not that way. The sunny path is over here.” The wind tucked itself neatly beside her.
6. Soon they reached a yard full of laundry. The wind hid behind a sheet and forgot which way was up.
7. Mira lifted the sheet’s corner. “Up is the way the clouds are.” The wind puffed out, politely, and dried three socks.
8. At the hilltop, the clouds spread wide above them. Mira pointed to a silver-edged opening. “There. Keep going up.”
9. The wind rose into the opening, then circled back. “I found it!” it called. A cool breeze brushed Mira’s cheeks.
10. “Thank you,” said the wind. “I thought wild things never got lost.” Mira folded her map. “Everyone gets lost sometimes.”
11. The wind hurried toward the clouds, carrying the smell of laundry and trees. Mira waved until the last leaf settled. Even wild things sometimes need help finding their way.
