2. But the mirror showed the hallway, the vase, and the sunny window. It showed everyone except Leo.
3. Leo tipped the mirror left. He tipped it right. He even held it upside down.
4. Grandma looked in. There she was, glasses and all. Leo looked in. There was only the kitchen behind him.
5. Leo carried the mirror outside and sat on the steps. He pulled his sleeves over his hands.
6. At the fence, a girl named Mina tugged at a tangled kite string. Leo set down the mirror and gently loosened the knot.
7. Mina hugged her kite. “You made it fly again,” she said. Leo’s cheeks grew warm.
8. Farther down the street, Mrs. Bell dropped her oranges. Leo filled her basket and carried it to her door.
9. Near the park, a little cat had caught a ribbon in a bush. Leo freed the ribbon and waited until the cat purred.
10. When Leo reached home, Mina waved, Mrs. Bell waved, and the little cat purred from the gate. Their faces shone when they saw him.
11. Leo checked the mirror one more time. It still showed everyone except him. Then he saw what the mirror could not.
12. Leo had not vanished. He was right there—in Mina’s smile, in Mrs. Bell’s grateful hug, and in the cat’s happy purr. At last, Leo saw himself clearly.
