The Firefly Who Blinked at the Wrong Time

A firefly keeps missing the group's signal, then invents a new blinking pattern that helps everyone find their way through fog.

The whole story

1. At dusk, Pip practiced blinking beneath a clover leaf in the meadow. The other fireflies gathered by the willow tree.

2. The group had a signal: two quick blinks, a pause, and one long blink. Pip tucked the pattern into the leaf satchel and tried it.

3. Two quick blinks sparkled by the willow. Pip blinked once too soon. Then Pip blinked once too late, and the others had already gathered at the moonflowers.

4. Pip tried again. The first blink came with the pause, and the long blink hid inside the two quick ones. Pip landed on a wet leaf and stared at the crooked reflections.

5. That evening, a pale fog settled over the meadow. The moonflowers vanished, the willow softened, and the fireflies could hear one another but could not see the path.

6. Pip listened instead of blinking. Each tiny answer made a quiet rhythm in the fog. Pip held up one glowing abdomen and thought of a pattern that had room for everyone.

7. Pip blinked one long time, then two short times. It was not the old signal. It was a new one.

8. A glow answered from the fog. Then another glow answered that glow. The new pattern made a bright trail of listening lights.

9. The fireflies followed Pip's long, short, short pattern between the reeds and around the pond. At last, the willow stood clear, with every small light safe beneath its leaves.

10. Pip had kept blinking at the wrong time. Then Pip made a new pattern: long, short, short. It helped everyone find their way through the fog.
